The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 81

Chapter 081

This dual cultivation isn't the kind of thing humans might find embarrassing. Instead, it's a legitimate method where cultivators intertwine and merge their spiritual energies. If used correctly, it can help one party remove deep-seated impurities.

However, the problem lies in the vast difference in cultivation levels between Su Zui and the Phoenix. They can't practice dual cultivation together. Even if they tried, it would turn into one party exploiting the other. Moreover, the Phoenix has absorbed a large amount of resentment-formed yin energy, which rampages violently within him, shattering his spiritual veins and transforming his divine body into a storm field that devours everything.

Such terrifying yin energy is dangerous even if a small amount is accidentally touched. Introducing it into one's body to merge and refine it is akin to suicide, leading to complete annihilation of the soul.

Fortunately, the system provided him with a tool that transformed his body into a transit station. The most violent yin energy, once inside him, would become as tame as the purest spiritual energy.

Of course, such a miraculous tool required more than just 6888 points and his spiritual bones.

But there was no time to haggle over the price now.

As if realizing something, the Phoenix, in a daze, suddenly snapped back to consciousness. His pupils contracted, and he tried to turn his face away, struggling to say, "No..."

Although he didn't know exactly what was happening, no one understood better than he did, having been tormented by the Heavenly Dao for years, the terrifying price of refining yin energy with a mortal body.

But he was already at his limit. He barely managed to utter a single word before his pupils dilated, and he lost consciousness completely, falling into a chaotic, surreal state.

Su Zui paid no attention to his small resistance. He bit the Phoenix's lower lip lightly and, while the Phoenix was unconscious from the torment of the yin energy, found a binding lock from the artifacts he had collected from various sects. He tied the Phoenix up, burned a teleportation talisman, and they both disappeared from the battlefield.

Dual cultivation naturally required a secluded place. Meng Qingzhi's corpse was not far away, his face disfigured and eyes wide open in death. With the fighting over, the various sects would soon come to investigate. This was not a suitable place for cultivation.

The Phoenix had a dream.

It was a very unfamiliar experience.

Since his birth, he had spent his life in constant struggle with yin energy. He wasn't a physical being but a remnant soul formed from the fortune of his clan, a creature that shouldn't exist in this world. Though named Phoenix, he was filthier than the demons of the abyss.

His world was often cold, painful, and devoid of sunlight.

But now, he felt a trace of warmth and peace.

Even the raging yin energy within him had calmed down significantly, as if a small part of it had been tamed, shrinking back obediently and becoming part of his body. The remaining majority, though still unruly, had also subdued somewhat, swirling resentfully but no longer threatening to tear his body apart in a frenzy.

This was a rare moment of tranquility for him.

Not to mention... there was a very unfamiliar sensation on his body.

It felt like something alive was slowly moving over him, warm and dry.

Due to the yin energy, the Phoenix had never had close contact with anyone since birth. Even trusted subordinates only spoke to him from a distance. The sensation of skin contact was extremely foreign to him.

Except... for that human, but even then, there had never been such an intimate moment.

Su Zui!

Suddenly recalling the scene before he lost consciousness, a wave of unease surged in the Phoenix's heart. His awareness broke free from the warm chaos.

Before his body fully awakened, his eyes were met with a golden sight. Autumn leaves, as brilliant as the sunrise slowly descending from the horizon, surrounded him. The ground beneath him was covered in fallen leaves, which crunched with every slight movement.

A gust of wind blew, sweeping a bunch of leaves from the branches, scattering them over his face. Golden leaves adorned his dark hair.

A few leaves landed on his chest, gently brushed away by a pair of slender hands. It was then that the Phoenix noticed his robe was loose, barely covering him.

He followed the hand upwards, seeing a thin wrist connected to a slightly muscular forearm. The shoulder, backlit, revealed faint blue veins. His gaze met a pair of dark eyes.

Phoenix: "...

In his chaotic life, he had never done such a thing in a moment of clarity and peace. As his awareness returned, heat slowly crept up his neck.

He was unsure whether to question what he saw before losing consciousness or to ask why he was in such a disheveled state.

Nearby, a binding lock lay haphazardly on the ground. The Phoenix vaguely remembered it being used to bind him, only to be discarded later.

"Awake?"

After brushing away the leaves, Su Zui didn't withdraw his hand. Instead, he naturally let it wander downwards.

There was no guilt in his expression.

It's just his pet bird, after all. What's wrong with a little teasing?

It wasn't the first time with this person... Su Zui had long forgotten what it meant to be shy.

He stared at the Phoenix's flushed neck and ears, suddenly intrigued. He licked his lips and pinched the Phoenix's earlobe.

That area was also burning hot, silently revealing the owner's chaotic emotions.

Realizing Su Zui was deliberately causing trouble, the Phoenix forced himself to snap out of his unfamiliar state. He grabbed Su Zui's wrist, his voice hoarse, "What's going on with your body?"

When the long-dormant yin energy invaded his body, he was on the brink of death. Yet now, he lay in this leaf-covered maple forest, seemingly fine.

Su Zui stared at him for a moment, "You're such a buzzkill. This isn't the time to talk about that."

He leaned down, biting the earlobe he had just pinched, "Be good. I'll explain everything after I get my reward."

The Phoenix had disappeared.

The Phoenix had disappeared again.

Suzaku, in bird form, perched on the stone desk where the Phoenix used to work. He puffed up his fluffy belly, thinking about his missing superior, and let out a deep sigh, "Chirp."

The Phoenix's disappearance wasn't a big deal; it wasn't the first time. As a fellow divine beast, Suzaku could sense that the Phoenix was still alive. The turmoil of yin energy in the world had also vanished, no longer giving off a deathly aura.

Besides, that human was with the Phoenix.

Though there was no concrete evidence, Suzaku had a gut feeling that the two of them would be fine, considering the peculiarities of Su Zui.

Su Zui was no ordinary mortal. To withstand the forces of heaven and earth with a mortal body was something even divine beasts born of fortune found difficult.

But he didn't want to delve into the reasons behind it.

Divine beasts like them had lived for countless years and had seen many strange things in the world. One or two chosen ones favored by the Heavenly Dao were not rare to them. They encountered one every few thousand years.

Unless it concerned their own life and death, they found it hard to be interested in things that would make mortals exclaim in surprise.

However, this time was a bit strange. He initially thought that Meng Qingzhi was the chosen one of this millennium, but he fell into the demonic path and allied with yin energy, meeting a tragic end.

Although the Heavenly Dao wasn't benevolent, it wouldn't choose such an unworthy candidate as its chosen one, would it?

The round bird head shook, trying to discard these past events from his mind.

He was more concerned about when Qing Luan would have time to take a break from his duties.

Yes, Qing Luan had been so busy dealing with the aftermath of the yin energy for a whole month that he hadn't had a proper conversation with him.

The initial disappearance of yin energy left behind remnants that needed to be dealt with. The human world was in ruins, and people's hearts were still unsettled. The reconstruction after the disaster was the most challenging phase.

Although the cultivation world seemed ethereal and detached from the mundane, it ultimately relied on mortals as its foundation. Without the skin, what can the hair attach to? All the major sects had sent most of their people and resources to heal the wounds inflicted by the yin energy on the rivers and the human world.

Even the divine beasts, who usually didn't concern themselves with mundane affairs, were busy with this. After all, they also needed human faith, and the chaos in the rivers affected their cultivation.

However, during this critical time, the Phoenix had skipped work

The busy tasks naturally fell to Qing Luan, the Phoenix's most trusted subordinate.

Small pockets of yin energy were causing trouble in some places, and beasts from the mountains were taking advantage of the chaos to rob the human world. Qing Luan had to decide and coordinate the manpower to handle these issues.

Suzaku wanted to help, but his fiery nature made him impatient. He could only handle errands and fights, but thinking through problems was too much for him.

After completing his assigned tasks, he transformed into a mini version of his original form and perched on the stone desk, silently watching Qing Luan immersed in his duties.

A month should have been a fleeting moment for a divine beast, but for some reason, it felt unbearably long to him.

Feeling drained, Suzaku let out another chirp, then collapsed on the stone desk like a deflated ball, his belly up, with a few fine feathers gently swaying.

Seeing the bird playing dead, Qing Luan finally spared him a glance. He looked at the straight-laying Suzaku and felt a bit guilty, realizing he might have given him too many tasks. "Too tired?"

His gaze fell on the fluffy little bird. Suzaku's feathers were a pure, fiery red, and the small ball on the desk looked like a warm little fireball, full of life and energy. The fine feathers on his belly made him look especially warm.

Perhaps he was too tired to think clearly, but Qing Luan found himself absentmindedly stroking the round little belly.

Suzaku immediately forgot about playing dead. His small eyes widened, and with a plop, he flipped over, standing on the desk with his feathers fluffed up, looking shocked, embarrassed, and incredulous.

Qingluan froze for a moment, realizing his mistake. "Sorry..." The area near the tail feathers was extremely private for birds, and even close colleagues shouldn't touch it so abruptly.

He was usually very restrained and courteous, not knowing what had come over him to act so inappropriately.

But before he could finish his apology, the red fluff ball, as if seeing a ghost, flapped its short wings and quickly ran along the wall.

It dashed to the cold pool where Xuanwu was recuperating and plopped into the water.

Suzaku's indescribable agitation turned into pure yang energy, melting the ice in the pool and turning it into a warm spring.

Xuanwu, awakened by the heat: ?

Where did this lovesick bird come from?

________________________

In the human world, in the maple forest near the school.

Su Zui, dressed simply with a bag slung over one shoulder, walked slowly down the mountain, looking like an ordinary student out for a stroll.

If you ignored his disheveled clothes and slightly sluggish steps.

The human world was still in chaos, and people at the foot of the mountain were in a hurry, many looking disheveled. In such tumultuous times, no one paid attention to a plainly dressed young man.

After removing the barrier at the mountain top, Su Zui tossed the talisman with dissipated spiritual energy into a roadside trash can. He thought with some regret that he had indeed been too complacent this time, forgetting that his body, though modified by the tool, was still different from a naturally born divine beast.

He shouldn't have pushed the Phoenix so hard; in the end, he was the one who suffered.

Several times, he almost thought he would die from exhaustion.

Su Zui rubbed his waist, took out a new talisman, and sent a message to his friend to let them know he was safe. Then he unzipped his backpack a bit.

A small, colorful bird, no bigger than half a palm, was curled up in the corner of the bag.

The Phoenix's feathers were somewhat similar to Suzaku's, mostly red, but the Phoenix's feathers were interspersed with many colorful ones, making him look more magnificent and noble. Previously, these colors were tainted by black yin energy, but now, with the yin energy tamed, they had returned to their original brilliance.

Of course, in his current small form, he just looked like a flashy little bird ball.

The bird ball and Su Zui stared at each other for a few seconds. The bird's small eyes flickered, then it suddenly turned around, showing Su Zui its colorful tail.

The colorful feathers hid the skin underneath, which was a deep red.

The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 80

Chapter 80

Notes: Hi! Sorry for my absence. Had to deal with a few things at work. But we're now back on track!

The yin energy within his body surged and shifted, leaving sinister black marks on his skin. These marks resembled malevolent black snakes, hissing and flicking their tongues.

However, the phoenix's body was that of a divine beast, not a fragile human shell that could be easily torn apart. Additionally, he had already refined some of the yin energy. So, despite its terrifying appearance, the yin energy within him couldn't harm him for now.

The real danger came from the yin energy that had just torn Meng Qingzhi apart but was still unsatisfied!

Without hesitation, the phoenix summoned his life flame. The bright red flames, almost alive, spread out instantly. When they encountered the yin energy, they burned it clean, leaving only a wisp of blue smoke.

Fire restrains yin and evil. The phoenix's life flame was the most yang and fierce fire in the world. This natural restraint allowed the phoenix to barely suppress the yin energy within him.

If it were any other divine beast, they would likely struggle to survive the initial invasion of the yin energy.

The flames were fierce, but Su Zui knew this wouldn't solve the immediate crisis.

The attacking yin energy seemed endless. As soon as one part was burned away, another took its place. They rolled and shrieked in the air, seemingly in pain from the flames, but continued to surge forward. It was as if they knew that if they could successfully devour this powerful yet desperate divine beast, their losses would be insignificant.

As the saying goes, "Many ants can kill an elephant."

The phoenix was heavily burdened. Although his life flame was powerful, it couldn't be sustained indefinitely. Under the relentless assault of the yin energy, the flames gradually dimmed, and his clothes were slowly tainted with black streaks.

These black streaks twisted and coiled like malevolent spirits from hell, eager to drag their prey into their lair.

It was a horrifying sight.

Su Zui, who had spent countless days and nights with the phoenix, knew all too well that the phoenix's body was indeed at its limit, just as Meng Qingzhi had said. It could no longer withstand any more yin energy.

Instinctively, he wanted to help, but he realized there was nothing he could do.

He had nearly exhausted his points, and the items in the system store were beyond his reach, except for a few small tools.

Besides—

Even if he could afford them, they would likely be of little help in the current situation.

This was a battle between the heavenly way and the phoenix, beyond the realm of human intervention.

Even with the system's assistance, he felt utterly powerless in this pure contest of strength.

Watching the phoenix's figure grow increasingly obscured by the encroaching black energy, Su Zui's heart sank bit by bit.

Outside the Mountains

The people from various sects and families, who had been thrown out by Su Zui, gradually regained consciousness.

Before they were fully awake, a cacophony of voices filled the air.

"Senior Brother! You're alive!!"

"Disciple—"

"Mother! Why has your cultivation level dropped so much?!"

For a moment, the yin-infested mountains seemed like a grand reunion scene.

It turned out that after Su Zui and the phoenix entered the mountains, the major sects had stationed people in safer areas outside to observe the situation.

They didn't dare send anyone into the perilous mountains, but they still held a glimmer of hope for the two.

After all, the phoenix was the leader of divine beasts, surviving since ancient times!

If even the phoenix couldn't handle the yin energy, then no one in the world could reverse the situation.

Their wait wasn't in vain. Shortly after the two entered, many people suddenly appeared out of nowhere, all unconscious and looking disheveled.

Upon closer inspection, they realized these were the people the Tao sect had previously sent to investigate!

They had thought these people were dead. Some had even set up memorial tablets for them. Seeing them alive was more than just a pleasant surprise!

Although they were dirty and disheveled, looking like beggars, and many had their cultivation levels significantly reduced, they were still breathing. That was a blessing amidst the misfortune.

"By the way, did you discover anything after entering the mountains?"

The survivors looked at each other, their faces a mix of fear and confusion.

To be honest, shortly after entering the mountains, they were captured by Meng Qingzhi. After being tortured, they were knocked unconscious.

They went in confused and came out just as confused.

They knew nothing about the current situation inside.

This left everyone disappointed, and the joy of reunion was greatly diminished.

"Sigh, I wonder how Little Friend Su is doing inside..." (Note: “小友 [xiǎoyǒu] = "little friend," an elder’s way of addressing a younger person whom he admires)

"Little Friend Su? Su Zui? Did Su Zui go in too?"

"Yes, Su Xiaoyou went in just before you were transported out. You owe your lives to him."

"I don't know what method he used to save you, but he himself is still... sigh!"

The group sighed for a while before falling into silence.

As they processed the current situation, those who had been rescued felt a mix of emotions.

Some of them might have had various grievances against Su Zui before, but at this moment, their minds were filled with gratitude.

[Ding! Side Quest 1: Family Honor - Progress: 100%]

[5000 experience points have been credited!]

[Congratulations! As the last descendant of the Su family, you have restored the family's honor with your noble character and undeniable strength! The ancestors of the Su family must be smiling so widely that their coffins are shaking!]

The notification of the completed quest suddenly echoed in Su Zui's mind.

Strange...

According to his plan, he needed to find a way to pass on the Su family's techniques to complete this task.

Why did it suddenly complete?

However, Su Zui didn't have time to ponder the reason. The important thing was that he now had 5000 points credited to his account.

He quickly browsed the system store, searching for tools that might resolve the current crisis.

But to his disappointment, those tools that could control the elements in the ordinary world seemed so ordinary in this mystical world.

As time passed, the situation became increasingly clear. The phoenix's life flame had completely extinguished.

The surrounding yin energy was decreasing, not because it had been burned away by the previous flames, but because it had found an opening with the disappearance of the protective flames and forced its way into the phoenix's body.

The once holy divine beast was now shrouded in ominous black energy.

Just as Su Zui was at his wit's end, the system, which had been unusually low-key since arriving in this world, suddenly spoke up: [Master, detecting that you have completed side quests in two consecutive worlds, the system generously offers you a lottery draw. If you're lucky, you might get a super discounted item!]

Su Zui: What? Don't bother me!

The system quickly added: [You might get a hidden item!]

Su Zui: ...?

This was too coincidental, like getting a pillow when you're sleepy.

Normally, he might have thought it over, but given the urgent situation, Su Zui immediately opted for the lottery.

The system's lottery wheel spun rapidly, and in less than a second, a golden light flashed.

The system's emotionless voice echoed in Su Zui's mind: [Original price 18,888! Original price 18,888 for a divine item! Now only 6,888! You can easily take it home for 6,888! Not buying it would be unwise for a traveler! Boohoo...]

Finally, there were two eerie sobbing sounds, as if the system was both promoting the item and lamenting Su Zui's inability to save points.

Ignoring the system's noise, Su Zui focused on the so-called divine item that seemed to be delivered right to his doorstep.

It was a jade pendant shaped like a yin-yang fish, pure and flawless, emitting a faint golden glow.

Skipping the less important details, Su Zui directly looked at the item's function.

[Yin-Yang Rotation: This yin-yang fish pendant's function is transformation. What is life to one will be death to another. Whatever your need, it can transform you into the safest intermediary. However, there is always a price to pay. The cost of using it is the exchange of your most precious possession.]

The price was 6,888 points, just enough to empty his account.

If he exchanged for this item, his points would be reduced to single digits.

Without hesitation, Su Zui chose to purchase it.

With a "ding," the golden yin-yang fish pendant landed in his palm.

At the same time, the last wisp of yin energy entered the phoenix's body.

The world returned to clarity, as if everything had ended.

The man stood still for a moment, then lifted his gaze towards Su Zui. His dark eyes were dull, reflecting no light, filled with deep, cold malice. His gaze towards Su Zui was devoid of any warmth, as if looking at a mere ant.

If the phoenix had previously been the embodiment of divine judgment, now he was the incarnation of evil. A single glance could make one's legs tremble and spirit shatter.

Su Zui frowned as he looked at his boyfriend, who suddenly seemed like a confused and forgetful child. After a moment, he understood why.

The phoenix was immortal because it bore the fate of the entire phoenix clan. Its soul was incredibly strong, so even if controlled by yin energy, it wouldn't die immediately.

However, once the yin energy eroded its soul completely, it would dissipate into the heavens and earth.

The signs of a damaged soul included confusion and even drastic personality changes.

Under such a massive invasion of yin energy, how long could even a divine beast survive?

At this moment, Su Zui finally realized that from the appearance of the yin energy, they had stepped into a perfect trap.

And this trap wasn't aimed at him, but at the phoenix.

It was only now that he understood that the heavenly way seemed more concerned with the phoenix, which should have perished long ago, than with him, the variable introduced by the system.

________________________

Without wasting any more time, Su Zui used the yin-yang fish pendant.

Once activated, the pendant precisely targeted the most precious thing on his body: the spirit bone that had altered the plot.

Without blinking, Su Zui tore open his chest and painfully extracted a piece of jade-like bone from his heart.

As soon as the spirit bone was revealed, the two small fish on the yin-yang pendant came to life, as if they had seen a delicacy. They transformed from a pendant into two living fish, one black and one white.

They opened their mouths and devoured the spirit bone, then swam to Su Zui's heart, taking the place of the original bone.

The phoenix, not far away, watched everything with a momentary flicker of confusion in his otherwise cold expression.

After confirming that the system tool had transformed his body into a vessel capable of converting yin energy, Su Zui adjusted his blood-stained clothes. Ignoring the phoenix's slightly odd look, he stepped forward, roughly grabbed the man's hair, and forced him to lower his head, bringing their lips together.

At the point of contact, a strand of violent yin energy was reluctantly pulled from the phoenix's body. It circulated within Su Zui before returning to the phoenix, now completely tamed.

Even in the mystical world, transformation must follow basic principles. Here, the fundamental law is dual cultivation.

The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 79

Chapter 79

After a brief calm, something unusual indeed surfaced.

Half a month after Su's father disappeared, signs of increased Yin energy appeared all over the country. The balance of Qi between heaven and earth was disrupted, and the once-dormant spirits and ghosts in the mortal realm grew stronger. Worse yet, evil spirits took advantage of the chaos, escaping from the underworld to wreak havoc among humans.

To suppress these restless spirits, the major sects had to deploy large numbers of personnel, leaving them overwhelmed and unable to spare resources to investigate the whereabouts of Meng Qingzhi.

Even ordinary people sensed the unease. On a damp street, a man in a suit glanced up at the gloomy sky, opened his umbrella, and grumbled irritably, "Why so much rain? It's only a few months into the year, and this wretched weather—so damp and cold! Can't stand it—"

Boom!

Before he could finish, a loud crash echoed in his ears. He turned to see a car smashed into a flowerbed by the roadside. Smoke billowed from the hood, and the crowd gathered, their voices mixed with blaring horns, adding to the annoyance.

"Damn it!"

An inexplicable sense of horror gripped the man. He shivered and muttered curses under his breath as he hurriedly crossed the street.

This was the fourth traffic accident he'd witnessed recently. Accidents seemed more frequent these days, occurring right before people's eyes, not just in distant news reports.

And it wasn't just traffic accidents—the frequency of fights, crimes, and other violent incidents had also surged. It was as if everyone was consumed by an evil force.

At his workplace, two employees had brawled violently over a minor issue yesterday. One even pulled out a knife, and both were taken away in an ambulance.

Why no police intervention? Because the police were already stretched thin dealing with a constant stream of accidents. They had no time for these "minor clashes."

The man sighed inwardly, "Even so, we office drones still have to work. The capitalists show no mercy."

________________________

"Continuing like this won't work." Through the window, Su Zui stared at the overly chaotic road.

In the unseen world, a faint layer of black energy enveloped everything—a solid manifestation of Yin energy. Originally, Phoenix could absorb and contain this Yin energy, but the strain from the shattered secret realm had left it weakened. Solving the Yin energy problem seemed impossible now.

Su Zui studied the map marked with Yin energy locations. Sinister clouds gathered like evil demons, ready to prey on unsuspecting victims.

Although Yin energy existed nationwide, the map revealed distinct trends. Some sects' strongholds or naturally blessed areas had minimal Yin energy, while other Yin-infested places grew increasingly dense.

Currently, the most concentrated Yin energy emanated from a mountain range near the border.

Su Zui's brow furrowed. "Meng Qingzhi is likely trapped there."

The map showed Yin energy swirling across the country, forming three dark dragon lines. These lines intersected various ley lines, connecting the nation's life force.

And that mountain range, where Yin energy was most intense, lay precisely at the convergence point of these three dragon lines—the source of their power.

If something went wrong there, the entire country would suffer.

Other cultivators weren't blind to this layout. Everyone suspected that Meng Qingzhi was hiding there.

But mere observation wasn't enough. Despite countless attempts, no one who entered the dangerous mountain range returned. Even powerful elders fell victim.

The Judgment Office had also sent numerous experts, with similar results. Qing Luan himself risked his life there.

His sacrifice left Qing Luan severely injured, and coupled with Phoenix's strange state after the secret realm's collapse, the Judgment Office teetered on the brink of chaos, relying solely on Suzaku to maintain order.

"Challenging the balance of heaven and earth—this person must be mad."

A hoarse voice interrupted Su Zui's thoughts. Phoenix, lying on a soft couch, had opened its eyes. Its expression was grim.

Su Zui touched Phoenix's forehead. The once-feverish warmth had turned icy. Clearly, Phoenix was still suffering.

He suppressed his inner worries and agreed, "Indeed, Meng Qingzhi might be the illegitimate child of fate."

Generally speaking, even top-tier mythical beasts like Phoenix would face divine retribution if they dared to tamper with the lifeblood of heaven and earth. Let alone a mere human.

The fact that Meng Qingzhi wreaked havoc on the nation's destiny and still lived indicated that he was indeed the child of destiny.

Su Zui closed the map, lost in thought. Finally, he sighed, "I need to make a trip. I have a premonition that Meng Qingzhi is waiting for me there."

Allowing the Yin energy to continue growing was no longer an option. The current disorder was merely chaotic; if left unchecked, it could escalate into a living hell.

To uncover the cause, he had to find the solution.

All these changes stemmed from him—the moment he refused to surrender the spirit bone, the world's plot veered off course. Meng Qingzhi, originally the child of destiny, had now started on a path of destruction.

The way to end this situation was already marked by the hands of fate.

He had no choice but to go.

Phoenix remained silent, merely squeezing his warm fingertips against its forehead. Its eyes, however, radiated icy determination. "Recently, I've absorbed some of the Yin energy. Let's go together. It's time for me to settle things with both you and destiny."

Su Zui clasped its hand, pondered, and finally agreed, "Alright."

He refrained from mentioning how he could ensure Phoenix's safety at the Judgment Office. First, Phoenix's keen perception made it impossible for him to secretly venture there alone. Second, as Phoenix had pointed out, his continued existence defied the original plot. When Phoenix invoked destiny, it likely resonated with some higher force.

Regardless of the outcome, avoiding the situation was never Su Zui's choice.

Now that he was committed, Su Zui openly shared the news of their mission to find Meng Qingzhi with everyone.

The major sects initially opposed the idea. Those who had ventured there before—except for Qing Luan, second only to Phoenix—hadn't returned. The odds seemed grim. As a prominent figure among the younger generation of mystics, Su Zui was highly regarded, and naturally, no one wanted him to risk his life.

Yet, Su Zui swiftly convinced them with a few words. "My father has been missing for days, likely due to Meng Qingzhi. Our enmity runs deep, and part of the blame lies with me. I must investigate."

The crowd fell silent.

In this world, the existence of destiny made people strongly believe in cause and effect.

Now that Su Zui's journey was inevitable, the sects scrambled. Many retrieved long-hidden treasures to equip him for protection. Although objectively, Su Zui's chances of defeating the current Meng Qingzhi were slim, he was still a part of the equation. Every problem had a solution, and having Su Zui try was better than sending others to their deaths.

The world had become a murky pool due to Meng Qingzhi's actions. All they could do was place their hopes on Su Zui.

________________________

Deep within the mountain range.

Meng Qingzhi surveyed the barren landscape. His voice carried a casual tone as he said, "You seem unconcerned about your father's fate, taking so long to arrive."

His words sounded relaxed, and a faint smile graced his lips, as if reminiscing with an old friend.

Yet malice flickered in his eyes, nearly overflowing.

After several days apart, this man had grown more enigmatic. Who knew what he'd experienced?

Su Zui ignored Meng Qingzhi's strange demeanor and focused on something at his feet.

His father lay there—worn and weak, but still breathing.

Not only his father, but others surrounded them, all in a similar state. Even a few animals lay sprawled nearby—likely the cultivators and enforcers sent by the mystical world and the Judgment Office.

Su Zui pondered.

Although Meng Qingzhi was audacious, disrupting the nation's destiny with Yin energy, he couldn't act with impunity. Now, he seemed to harbor concerns. Despite imprisoning these people and creatures, he hadn't—perhaps couldn't—take their lives.

It seems that even the tolerance of destiny has its limits.

Meng Qingzhi noticed Su Zui's scrutinizing gaze and lifted Father Su by the neck, malice in his eyes. "What if I kill him right in front of you?"

Su Zui glanced at him. "Really? You're welcome to try."

Someone as vengeful as Meng Qingzhi would have already acted against Su's father if he could. Waiting until now was unusual.

Seeing that Su Zui remained unfazed, Meng Qingzhi's relaxed expression faded. He threw Father Su at Su Zui's feet, gripping the old man's neck with a sinister look.

Of course, Meng Qingzhi had attempted to disgust Su Zui by killing the elderly man!

However, ever since he manipulated Yin energy to disrupt the balance of heaven and earth, destiny seemed to prevent him from harming living beings. Whenever he tried, the very Yin energy he controlled would turn against him, threatening to tear him apart.

Meng Qingzhi resumed his smile, feigning concern. "No worries. You'd better cherish this time and reminisce with the old man. After all, you'll soon be a lifeless corpse, never seeing him again."

Ignoring him, Su Zui surveyed the people and creatures lying around, lost in thought.

Meng Qingzhi sneered. "Do you think having protection makes you invulnerable?" His gaze fixed on something behind Su Zui. His expression hardened. "The mighty Phoenix, still hiding like a commoner."

A crimson figure emerged from the black mist—Phoenix, his demeanor cold and tinged with disdain.

Phoenix hadn't intended to hide for long. The Yin energy here resonated with his own, allowing him to investigate. Indeed, he discovered something intriguing.

Although the surface Yin energy seemed obedient to Meng Qingzhi's commands, it wasn't entirely under his control. It acted like a borrowed tool, following preset instructions.

Even Phoenix's whereabouts remained hidden until he intentionally revealed himself, catching Meng Qingzhi's attention.

Rather than Meng Qingzhi controlling the Yin energy, it seemed the Yin energy manipulated him.

Meng Qingzhi, at best, was a puppet of destiny.

This kind of character was repulsive to even look at.

Seeing Su Zui and Phoenix treating him like air, as if he'd been performing a solo act for ages, Meng Qingzhi's face twitched. "Do you think I don't know your current situation? What divine beast? You're barely hanging on!"

Before he finished speaking, the surrounding Yin energy transformed into vague, ferocious beasts, lunging at Su Zui and Phoenix.

Suddenly, the world seemed drenched in black ink.

Su Zui calmly hurled out talismans, deflecting Meng Qingzhi's attacks.

Amidst the chaos, Su Zui discreetly raised his hand. In an instant, everyone lying on the ground—including Father Su—vanished.

He had exchanged for a teleportation item in the system store, sending these half-dead individuals and creatures away to prevent collateral damage. Whether this would come back to haunt him remained uncertain.

Meng Qingzhi remained oblivious to Su Zui's actions. Now enveloped in a black mist of Yin energy, his features blurred.

Despite the barrage of talismans, the Yin energy barely diminished.

Su Zui hadn't expected the talismans alone to defeat Meng Qingzhi; delaying him was the best outcome.

However, Su Zui's brow furrowed because of the strange scene before him.

Within Meng Qingzhi's mist, something peculiar stirred—a force eager to break free. It occasionally contorted his form, somewhat resembling the previously Yin-controlled Phoenix, but far worse.

Meng Qingzhi now resembled a creature filled with Yin energy, transcending humanity.

Su Zui sensed that something was amiss. This wasn't the appearance of a child of destiny.

The previously motionless Phoenix also sensed it, shielding Su Zui with a barrier and pushing him backward.

Amidst the swirling Yin energy, Su Zui witnessed an utterly bizarre scene.

Meng Qingzhi's body swelled, distorted to the extreme, until it resembled an inflated ball—then burst!

Su Zui couldn't help but stare.

Did Meng Qingzhi really die so easily?

While it wasn't a given that protagonists couldn't die, Su Zui hadn't even touched Meng Qingzhi. Suddenly, he was gone. It felt too convenient.

Convenient... as if it had been planned.

An increasingly strange feeling gnawed at Su Zui. Alarm bells rang in his mind.

Sure enough, after Meng Qingzhi's body shattered, everything didn't settle down.

From the cracks emerged copious amounts of pitch-black Yin energy.

These energies resembled ravenous beasts. After devouring Meng Qingzhi, they remained unsatisfied, extending tendrils to explore their surroundings.

Suddenly, these dark tendrils paused, sensing fresh prey. They surged toward Phoenix.

Phoenix's body now bore countless horrifying black marks. Its internal Yin energy seemed to recognize its kin, desperately trying to escape from within.

Recalling Meng Qingzhi's gruesome demise, Su Zui's heart skipped a beat.

The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 78

Chapter 78

Notes: I'm so sorry for the long hiatus. Had a lot going on since I decided to quit my old job and transition to a new one.

Will make up for my absence with daily releases for the next couple of weeks. Thank you so, so much for waiting. Happy reading! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Father Su is missing.

Even though Su Zui had taken precautions in advance, he couldn't protect him completely.

From the moment of his disappearance, Su Zui and the various Tao families exhausted every means to search for him, but they didn't find any useful information.

Phoenix also secretly mobilized the power of the Judgment Office, but it failed to find even a trace of Meng Qingzhi.

Inside the Judgment Office, Qing Luan frowned as he listened to the reports from his subordinates.

As a divine beast overseeing the world, he rarely felt wary of a human.

Recalling the outbreak of evil (Yin) energy in the small secret realm earlier, his unease grew stronger. He warned the Suzaku in his arms, "This human is not ordinary. With recent disturbances in the mortal realm, stay close to me and don't wander off."

He suspected that the residual Yin energy in the small secret realm hadn't all been absorbed by Phoenix.

Phoenix's physical condition was well-known to him. The previously untransformed Yin energy had kept his body on the brink of collapse. Now, with a continuous influx of Yin energy from the world, as long as humanity's evil thoughts persisted, it would emerge from new sources.

Evil things despised Yang energy the most.

When they were weak, they avoided it, but when they grew powerful, their greatest desire was to annihilate Yang energy, their natural enemy.

Suzaku and the Xuanwu followed the balance of Yin and Yang. Suzaku's star position lay in the south, representing fire and presiding over summer. Among the divine beasts, he possessed the most abundant Yang energy.

Naturally, Yin energy harbored deep resentment toward him. The previous attack on Suzaku during his journey south was likely premeditated.

Already injured from the previous assault, Suzaku would be virtually defenseless if it struck again.

The chubby bird nestled in his arms nodded vigorously, his shiny black eyes flickering with a hint of guilt.

To this day, he didn't dare tell Qing Luan that the human he had encountered in the secret realm was none other than Meng Qingzhi.

Although unintentional, the artifact he had given Meng Qingzhi might have caused trouble...

________________________

Phoenix's fear surpassed even Qing Luan's.

Despite using the power of rules to deduce Meng Qingzhi's whereabouts, he found only chaos. Worse still, the rules backlashed, injuring him. His face grew paler, but his gaze turned more piercing. "This person can actually deceive fate. I never expected there would be a cultivator capable of such things in the world today.

Orders were immediately dispatched to all the divine beasts within the Judgment Office, instructing them to enhance their vigilance and be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Su Zui agrees, “Yes, it’s strange.”

However, in his heart, he believed that Meng Qingzhi wasn’t just deceiving fate. Rather, fate itself leaned toward him.

After all, as the male protagonist, even in his current state, he carried an aura of destiny that surpassed ordinary individuals.

The only consolation lay in the fact that Su Zui had already used secret techniques to stabilize his father’s soul. Given Meng Qingzhi’s current condition, harming Father Su's soul would be very difficult. Because of this, Su Zui was least concerned about his father’s safety.

But the inability to cause harm didn’t mean Meng Qingzhi would passively await his fate.

Father Su was his sole relative in this world, a direct blood connection. Through this lineage, influencing Su Zui would be easy.

Strangely enough, an entire week had passed since Su Zui’s father disappeared, yet nothing happened.

However, a long period of calm often meant more intense storms.

Right now, there seemed to be no solution.

In this world, the male protagonist’s halo held greater significance than in the previous one.

While technology dominated the modern world, luck remained an intangible force with limited impact on reality.

However, in the cultivation world, destiny was all too real, a force that ancient legends attributed to exceptionally gifted cultivators. Even though spiritual energy had decreased, destiny still determined a cultivator’s foundation.

For instance, now, a simple phrase like “chaos in the heavenly path” could perfectly conceal Meng Qingzhi’s whereabouts, placing everyone at a disadvantage.

Even Phoenix couldn’t find Meng Qingzhi’s location. Su Zui understood that this time, fate was favoring Meng Qingzhi. All they could do was wait and respond when it's the right time.

Phoenix lowered his gaze, silently suppressing the surging energy within him.

The backlash from the rules caused Yin energy to erupt within his body. Unrestrained, the Yin energy etched grotesque black marks on his exposed skin, writhing like hidden desires on the verge of breaking free.

Without looking, Phoenix knew how terrifying his appearance must be at this moment.

Recalling the harm he had inadvertently caused Su Zui during its memory loss, his eyes dimmed. He didn’t glance at Su Zui’s expression but subtly adjusted his wide sleeves to conceal his hand.

Unaware of Phoenix’s subtle movement, Su Zui observed the weakened divine beast. His brow furrowed wondering what he's thinking about.

The lingering Yin energy within Phoenix remained a constant threat.

Su Zui worried about him. Ever since Phoenix had confided his situation to him earlier, this concern had enveloped him entirely.

Although forcibly merging with Yin energy, it was evident that Phoenix struggled to suppress it. Yin and spiritual energy clashed within his body, teetering on the edge of imbalance. Maintaining balance was already challenging, converting Yin energy for his own use seemed nearly impossible.

Su Zui speculated that this problem might be related to the forced changing of the storyline.

In the original plot, Phoenix was completely consumed by Yin energy. Now, not only had he survived, but he also countered the Yin energy. One could say he defied fate. Born as a divine beast in response to the world's needs, the Phoenix's changed destiny directly disrupted the rules of this world.

If this happened to any other creature in this world, they would likely have succumbed to the backlash of rules and destiny, dying without a trace. Phoenix, as the last survivor of its lineage, had the accumulated fortune of his entire clan from ancient times, which made even the heavenly order wary.

However, this situation was unsustainable. Yin energy would continue to grow, and Phoenix's capacity is fixed. If he couldn't fully control the Yin energy, eventually, the expanding Yin energy would rupture the divine beast's vessel.

Even if Phoenix could hold on, Su Zui didn't want to see him struggling every day.

Glancing at his pitiful experience points balance, Su Zui suppressed the urge to purchase healing items. While he couldn't cure the situation entirely, he could at least make Phoenix more comfortable.

However, with no one knowing what Meng Qingzhi was up to, he can't be distracted.

Who knew if greater dangers lay ahead? Both logically and emotionally, Su Zui shouldn't waste his resources at this moment.

Looking at items in the system store a few more times, especially those for potent pain relief, he sadly exited without making a purchase.

The system observed Su Zui's internal struggle between wanting to splurge and restraining himself: "..."

Those experience points seemed increasingly precarious.

Regret.

He regretted it so much.

Why did he naively assume that completing side quests would give him extra experience points?

Clearly, the addition of a Boss would only make their poor family even worse off.

The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 77

Chapter 77

Su Zui stared at the bird, which seemed to be breakdancing. Well, he wasn’t sure what it was doing, but its movements resembled a bouncing dumpling on a chopping board—oddly adorable.

Su Zui watched with delight, even considering capturing the moment on his phone.

Phoenix hopped in place a couple of times, gradually realizing something was amiss.

It lowered its head, examining its plump body. “…………”

Then it rolled into a corner.

Self-isolation mode activated.

Su Zui, halfway through pulling out his phone, couldn’t help feeling regretful. “What’s wrong?”

He hadn’t managed to record it!

However, the now self-isolated Phoenix completely ignored him. It sat motionless, facing the corner like a stiff, fake bird.

Its fluffy feathers puffed out, transforming from a chubby chirp into a miniature moon-shaped dumpling.

“Hmm?”

Su Zui gently patted its head, eventually realizing that it might be feeling shy. He didn’t say anything, just smiled faintly, and went to take a shower.

________________________

When he emerged from the bathroom, the momentarily foolish bird had adjusted its mood. It perched back on his shoulder like nothing had happened.

Although Su Zui still thought about the adorable breakdancing, the bird was too bashful. He refrained from mentioning it again, carrying the fuzzy accessory with him as he met the members of the Tao community.

Almost all the prominent families within the Tao community had sent representatives — either influential clan heads or elders.

Their reactions were as expected.

Their central theme was expressing gratitude to him. Although Su Zui found their repetitive words tiresome, he understood it was a necessary procedure. He mustered his spirits, putting on a standard professional smile.

Su Zui had genuinely saved numerous young Tao disciples over the years. These individuals were highly anticipated successors within their families. If anything happened to them, the entire family’s future would be at risk.

To show their appreciation, most families generously offered substantial tokens of gratitude.

Su Zoo graciously accepted, but he wasn’t a true philanthropist seeking rewards for good deeds.

The once-dwindling small treasury, due to the mishap with the illusion array, was now gradually replenishing.

The atmosphere during the gift-giving was harmonious. However, a few faces stood out as incongruous.

The expressions of the elders from the Meng and Xie families were somewhat restrained.

The Meng family faced trouble due to Meng Qingzhi’s actions, making him unpopular within the Tao community. As for the Xie family, they had previously tried to extort resources from Su Zui, resulting in a complete falling out.

The Meng family elders felt awkward due to their unruly descendant’s troubles. However, when they glanced at the visibly anxious Xie family elders nearby, their mindset oddly eased.

Why worry? There was someone even worse off than them!

At least they could blame everything on Meng Qingzhi alone and still had a chance to redeem themselves. But the Xie family’s attempt at blackmailing Su Zui was a collective effort, led by their family head. It was an indelible stain.

Now that Su Zui’s reputation was soaring within the Tao community, almost serving as a political correctness compass, it was evident that the Xie family would face subtle exclusion.

The Xie family, already diminished due to the damaged protective array and injured elders, desperately needed external support. This situation was akin to removing the last straw, leaving them to watch their family decline.

Perhaps in a hundred years, mentioning the Xie family in the capital would draw blank stares — few would remember them.

The people of the Xie family were becoming increasingly anxious, desperate to make amends. The elders who had come this time were tasked with the mission of reconciling with Su Zui.

However, despite their fervor, the object of their attention paid them no heed whatsoever.

Su Zui was never one to be magnanimous. While he wouldn’t take advantage of his position to harm the Xie family further, he also had no interest in engaging in mutual flattery with them.

The Xie family elder grew more and more anxious, his gaze shifting to Xie Yu, who stood beside Su Zui, hope in his eyes.

After all, Xie Yu was their own flesh and blood. Could he truly disregard family ties like this?

Yet, to his disappointment, Xie Yu glanced at him for a few seconds and then calmly averted his gaze, as if he hadn’t even noticed the elder’s meaningful look!

Xie family elder: “…”

Frustrated, but unable to speak out!

This brief confrontation unfolded in mere seconds, barely noticed by anyone.

Su Zui, on the other hand, did notice, but he didn’t let it bother him.

The current state of the Xie family was no longer worth his attention.

Although everyone was warm and grateful toward Su Zui, they were all capable individuals from various influential families. Most were from his father’s generation, and they carried themselves with dignity and restraint. After exchanging pleasantries and gifts, they considered their social duties fulfilled.

However, there was a small minority who lacked restraint. Even after the gift exchange, they weren’t satisfied and insisted on seizing the opportunity to—

Someone noticed the small bird perched on Su Zui’s shoulder and curiously asked, “Mr. Su, is this your contracted spirit beast?”

Since Su Zui’s fame had spread, the exposure of the Su family’s background as a beast-taming lineage was no secret.

Su Zui smiled, tacitly acknowledging it but not elaborating further.

Thinking he had received confirmation, the person proceeded to lavish praise on the phoenix.

—Even though they had no idea what was so praiseworthy about this seemingly ordinary bird with minimal spiritual energy!

But, as they say, where there’s a will, there’s a way. From its feathers to its temperament, this person managed to extol the virtues of the “unremarkable” bird.

Su Zui suppressed a laugh. “…You’re too kind.”

Phoenix, hearing this, bobbed its head in satisfaction, puffing out its tiny chest.

The person hadn’t gotten a single detail right, but their keen eye had correctly identified it as Su Zui’s. Their judgment was still accurate.

Anonymous bystander: “I don’t know why, but I suddenly feel like I’m reporting to my superior and receiving praise!”

As for the matter of the Su family regaining its status and Tao lineage, it had already been taken care of long before Su Zui’s arrival. As soon as he appeared, someone handed him the necessary documentation.

With this series of actions, the progress bar for the mainline task of restoring the family’s honor had reached seventy percent.

While progress would slow down later, it was only a matter of time to complete the task as long as Su Zui didn’t intentionally sabotage it.

With his own affairs settled, there were still many other matters to attend to.

The elders wasted no time and held a small meeting right there, with Su Zui representing the newly reinstated Su family.

He remained quiet throughout, rarely offering opinions. Only when the discussion turned to the whereabouts of Meng Qingzhi did he smile slightly and voluntarily provide a clue: “I have some information on Meng Qingzhi…”

He revealed the details of Meng Qingzhi’s dealings with the Rakshasa.

Upon hearing that Meng Qingzhi possessed evil energy, the expressions of those present changed.

This Meng Qingzhi was truly up to no good!

“This evil energy can spawn a great demon with just a trace, wreaking havoc in the world!”

“We must find Meng Qingzhi and suppress the evil energy in his possession.”

“But how much evil energy does he have? If it’s too much, we might not be able to handle it. Perhaps we should report this to the Judgment Office…”

The head of the Tao Association furrowed his brow, pondering for a moment, before finally looking at Su Zui. “Meng Qingzhi’s whereabouts are elusive. Do you have any more specific clues, young friend?”

Su Zui handed over a talisman with a knowing look. “I placed a tracking spell on the Rakshasa. She’ll definitely go find Meng Qingzhi, and following her will make things easier. However, be cautious — she’s incredibly powerful.”

“Thank you, young friend,” the Association head inquired. “How many personnel can each faction allocate now?”

Previously, they had assigned people to search for Meng Qingzhi, but the effort was minimal. Now, they couldn’t afford to underestimate the situation.

Under the Association head’s guidance, tasks were systematically delegated.

Watching everyone fervently discuss how to capture Meng Qingzhi, Su Zui couldn’t help but find it amusing. He recalled how, in the original book, Meng Qingzhi’s call would rally the entire younger generation of disciples in the Tao community. It was a situation that made him chuckle.

In the original story, although Meng Qingzhi didn’t break the illusion array in a desperate move, almost all of Tao’s young disciples fell within the illusion, while only Meng Qingzhi emerged unscathed.

The losses were undoubtedly greater back then.

However, at that time, Meng Qingzhi had already obtained the original body’s spiritual bone, and his strength and reputation far exceeded the present. His subtle manipulation within the illusion array, pulling people to shield him, went largely unnoticed. Even those who sensed something amiss couldn’t pinpoint it, and the matter was eventually brushed aside without blaming Meng Qingzhi.

This time, due to Su Zui’s lack of a spiritual bone, everything had changed.

He absentmindedly touched the plump little bird on his shoulder, a sardonic smile playing on his lips.

Meng Qingzhi was cunning and always seemed to escape danger by a hair’s breadth.

The Tao Association tirelessly pursued him for three whole months. They even spotted him twice, yet he managed to slip away each time — an eerie phenomenon.

The Association head sighed, “He certainly has luck on his side. It’s a shame. If he had chosen the right path, he could have achieved great things.”

However, this was just a superficial lament. Meng Qingzhi’s actions had caused immense trouble, stirring up anger. With the power of heaven and earth’s evil energy in his hands, he was undoubtedly a walking disaster.

Even if he wanted to turn over a new leaf, the Tao community would never accept him again.

________________________

Meng Qingzhi leaned against a mountain wall, wiping away the blood from his lips.

His clothes were covered in dust, and exhaustion etched his face.

These past three months had been beyond chaotic. First, the Rakshasa turned on him unexpectedly. Then, the Tao Association sent multiple teams to capture him, making every step treacherous.

He had evaded capture by hiding and running for three months, nearly reaching his breaking point.

His injuries accumulated, and he couldn’t hold out much longer.

For the first time in his life, Meng Qingzhi felt the desperation of being cornered.

He slowly uttered a name, infusing it with bone-chilling coldness: “Su… Zui.”

Like most people assumed, Meng Qingzhi believed Su Zui had disappeared due to injuries sustained during the illusion array’s collapse, assuming he was weak.

That’s why he confidently enlisted the Rakshasa, believing she would easily deal with Su Zui and provide him with the coveted spiritual bone.

But little did he know that Su Zui hadn’t been injured at all. In fact, he had even manipulated the Rakshasa to oppose him, instigating the Tao community to eliminate him completely.

As Meng Qingzhi fled in disarray, Su Zui was likely sitting comfortably behind the scenes, receiving reports on his current state. Did Su Zui find amusement in his plight?

Unlike the infamous Meng Qingzhi, Su Zui had become a hero in the Tao community due to saving people within the illusion array.

Meng Qingzhi thought bitterly, “Su Zui isn’t exactly benevolent. Is he some kind of saint?!”

There were countless ways to save people, yet Su Zui chose the most emotionally stirring method. His ambition was becoming increasingly evident.

But unfortunately, the Tao community’s eyes were blinded, and they continued to idolize Su Zui.

Meng Qingzhi felt as if he were ensnared by a curse. If only Meng Heyang had been more resourceful and obtained Su Zui’s spiritual bone earlier, he would have started from a higher position, and things would be different now!

The one they should be praising wasn’t Su Zui — it was him.

If only he had the spiritual bone…

Meng Qingzhi’s frustration grew, and he spat out a mouthful of blood.

The more he was denied, the more unwilling he became.

Cultivation and self-cultivation should ideally steer clear of getting entangled in trivial matters. However, after days of relentless pressure, this thought had taken root in Meng Qingzhi’s mind like an unyielding weed.

His brow furrowed with resentment—an ominous sign of inner turmoil. Unbeknownst to him, the malevolent energy he had previously bound with a magical artifact had quietly escaped, leaving a faint dark aura between his eyebrows.

Three days later, he appeared at a remote town’s train station, purchasing a ticket with a false identity. If Su Zui were here, he would undoubtedly recognize it as a ticket to the city where Father Su resided.

The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 76

Chapter 76

However, it was already too late.

Both Su Zui and Phoenix had keen senses. The moment Suzaku approached, they sensed the arrival of this unexpected guest, and their gaze simultaneously focused on him.

Startled, Suzaku fluttered and fell to the ground, wings trembling. “…”

The night was dark, the wind biting, and the atmosphere heavy. It was the perfect moment for silencing a bird.

Suzaku was in a panic.

Would Phoenix really spare him after hearing that secret?

Still, he had to pretend to remain calm. “Good evening, Boss,” he stammered.

Phoenix turned to look at him silently.

The air grew so still that it felt suffocating—

Wait, no, he was a divine beast; breathing wasn’t necessary, and he wouldn’t suffocate.

Suzaka stiffened.

Why did he bother with greetings? He should have fled the moment things went south!

His legs trembled as he struggled to move out of Phoenix’s line of sight.

Under Phoenix’s deathly gaze, Suzaku no longer felt like a powerful divine beast who could command the wind and rain. Instead, he felt like a plump quail with its fate hanging by a thread.

Pathetic, weak, and chubby.

Su Zui observed the little bird on the ground, moving at a snail’s pace, trembling with each step. He pondered, “…”

Was it just his imagination, or had the cool, suave male lead from the original novel undergone some sort of mutation?

Under the dual pressure of two deathly stares, Suzaku felt like he might drop dead on the spot.

Thankfully, Qing Luan’s timely appearance saved him.

Seeing that familiar figure, an inexplicable surge of strength filled Suzaku. Flapping his wings, he chirped and launched himself like a small cannonball into Qing Luan’s arms.

His head buried under Qing Luan’s arm, only his round little bottom remained visible.

His tail feathers still twitched rhythmically.

He put on a show of self-pity.

Qing Luan stared at his squawking, wiggling colleague: …?

Should he sign up Suzaku for a psychological counseling session?

But that wasn’t his concern right now.

Seeing the intact Boss before him, Qing Luan finally relaxed.

Although the atmosphere seemed odd, it didn’t matter.

He asked gently, “Are you okay?”

At the same time, he glanced at the human standing in front of Phoenix.

The human looked familiar, someone who had performed well in the illusion array. Qing Luan remembered him disappearing around the same time as Phoenix when the illusion array shattered.

Earlier, when he detected the human’s scent at the small inn, he suspected it was this person.

Countless speculations raced through Qing Luan’s mind, but he refrained from drawing conclusions.

Although he didn’t know how this human had gained Phoenix’s approval, the fact that they stood here together meant nothing else mattered.

Divine beasts had their pride, and Phoenix wouldn’t appreciate anyone meddling in his affairs.

With just a glance, Qing Luan suppressed his curiosity and focused on the Boss, awaiting his response.

Phoenix hesitated. What should he do about his overly talkative subordinate?

Suppressing the urge to kill the bird, he took a deep breath. “…I’m fine.”

Why did these two birds arrive at such an opportune moment?

He hadn’t even had a chance to agree!

With Suzaku and Qing Luan’s interruption, the atmosphere completely dissipated.

And they missed the perfect opportunity.

Before Qing Luan could respond, Phoenix quickly said, “You go back first; I have something to attend to.”

That was a polite way of saying, “Please leave.”

Qing Luan still felt concerned, but when Phoenix told them to leave, Suzaku nudged his head under Qing Luan’s arm, like a hungry little chick.

Even the frequency of his tail feathers wagging intensified.

It was practically a frantic butt-wiggling hint!

Qing Luan: “…”

Politeness compelled Qing Luan to take his leave. After all, it wouldn’t be proper for the boss to witness a bird wiggling its behind so vigorously: “I’m glad you’re okay, sir. We were all worried. Hope you’ll be back soon.”

Phoenix needed to handle official business first.

When trouble arose in the mortal realm, the Judgment Office inevitably became chaotic. During this time of searching for the missing boss, Qing Luan had accumulated a lot of work.

Thinking about those tasks, even Qing Luan, who was accustomed to work, couldn’t help feeling a headache.

Handling it alone was indeed challenging.

…Hopefully, Phoenix would finish dealing with personal matters and return to work soon!

________________________

On the way back, Suzaku buried himself halfway under Qing Luan’s arm. Qing Luan stroked his damp feathers for a while before he finally pulled his head out.

Qing Luan couldn’t fathom why Suzaku suddenly seemed so despondent: “What’s wrong with you?”

Suzaku couldn’t explain the situation. Right now, he was just a bird facing danger, and he had informed Qing Luan that both of them were in trouble.

For the sake of peace in the Judgment Office, he could only silently endure this pain that his small body shouldn’t be experiencing.

After all, he already had enough on his plate.

Suzaku grew sadder the more he thought about it. Eventually, he started hiccuping: “Chirp, chirp…”

Why did his little bird life have to be so miserable?

Reflecting on it, Suzaku realized that ever since he was awakened in the Secret Realm and gave those gifts to the human named Meng Qingzhi, he had either been unlucky or on an unlucky path every day.

Suzaku came to a conclusion:

That human must be carrying an excessive amount of bad luck, and it was rubbing off on him!

Next time he saw that person, he’d run far away.

Qing Luan looked at the dewy-eyed bird in his arms: “…”

Sigh.

Suzaku’s inner world was truly mysterious.

________________________

The two meddlesome birds had left, but the atmosphere had been thoroughly disrupted.

Su Zui got his answer and put the Phoenix Spirit Jade back on.

Seeing his actions, Phoenix’s gaze deepened.

He wanted to say something, but his lips moved, and yet nothing came out.

Su Zui was used to it. He took the initiative to greet him: “Do you have something to attend to?”

That bird seemed to be hinting that Phoenix should go back to work?

Coincidentally, Su Zui also needed to deal with Meng Qingzhi. It was better for both of them to be busy separately.

Although separating right after confirming their relationship wasn’t ideal, Su Zui was no longer a starry-eyed youth. He accepted it quite well.

He didn’t see any problem with it.

In his previous world, he and Fu Shijun each had their careers. They weren’t glued to each other every day. Sometimes they went on business trips, and they wouldn’t see each other for half a month.

They were mature men who didn’t engage in clingy behavior.

But Phoenix didn’t see it that way.

As a bird who hadn’t had a partner before, he didn’t want to be separated from his prospective mate even for a second.

To forget the subordinate’s hint for even a second, he firmly declared, “No, I’ll be with you.”

One could say they were being quite clingy!

Su Zui: “…”

And so, a few minutes later, a round, chubby little bird perched on Su Zui’s shoulder.

The entire body of feathers is black and red, resembling a rose-filled dumpling. The small beak is a delicate shade of yellow, and its tiny eyes are deep black, with a hint of dampness.

Whether due to nervousness or excitement, its feathers puff up, making it look like a dandelion. When it lowers its head, it buries itself in the fluffy feathers, becoming a complete round ball.

It’s a classic chubby bird!

________________________

When Xie Yu saw Su Zui, he first nervously inquired about his health. He had been extremely anxious during this period.

After confirming that Su Zui was okay, Xie Yu’s gaze fell on the little bird perched on his shoulder, and he looked surprised. “Is this… your contracted spirit beast?”

He knew that although Su Zui had the Su family’s beast-taming technique, he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about contracting spirit beasts. Xie Yu rarely saw him interact closely with any of them.

Had he finally come to terms with contracting a spirit beast?

Xie Yu was curious. What kind of special spirit beast could make Su Zui break his usual indifference? After all, when that highly talented black cat had persistently approached him, Su Zui had remained aloof and eventually declined the contract.

Xie Yu scrutinized this “spirit beast.”

It was covered in fluffy, round feathers, exquisitely cute. It looked harmless, like a small plush toy hanging from Su Zui’s shoulder. Its spiritual energy fluctuation was almost negligible. It seemed quite ordinary.

Would the girls in their class react to it like they did with the previous black cat, showering it with “so cute” screams?

As Xie Yu pondered this, the little bird sensed his gaze and suddenly looked up at him. In its originally innocent bean-like eyes, there was an inscrutable depth.

Their eyes met, and it felt as if a top predator had locked onto him, enveloping him in a chilling aura.

As if it could make him disappear from this world at any moment, and no one would notice.

Su Zui shook his head and absentmindedly rubbed the bird’s head on his shoulder. “No.”

The bird’s head tilted from his touch.

The cool and aloof expression it had just worn naturally dissipated.

Xie Yu stared blankly. Was it his imagination?

Why did he feel an irresistible aura of dominance emanating from this chubby bird?

In fact, he had almost been frightened out of his wits by it.

Watching Su Zui pet the bird, Xie Yu’s heart nearly skipped a beat. “Don’t—”

This bird had given him such a fierce look after just one glance. It seemed irritable, ready to peck him on the spot!

But just as he was about to warn Su Zui to be careful, he saw the bird, which had previously given him a death stare, not only refraining from pecking but also nuzzling Su Zui’s neck with its fluffy little head.

Even Xie Yu, a straight guy, had to admit that at this moment, he found the bird’s actions adorable.

Xie Yu: …?

Wasn’t this differential treatment too obvious?!

Xie Yu’s voice gradually faded…

Su Zui looked puzzled. “What’s wrong?”

Xie Yu felt an inexplicable calmness. “Nothing. I suddenly can’t remember what I wanted to say.”

Su Zui hadn’t introduced Phoenix’s identity. Phoenix’s awakening had been kept secret within the Tao community, so he wouldn’t casually reveal it.

He changed the topic. “I apologize for worrying you these past few days.”

Given the phoenix’s unique situation, he couldn’t expose any traces and hadn’t contacted anyone.

Xie Yu replied, “It’s okay. Your safe return is what matters most. Do you need to visit the Tao Association? They’ve been looking for you for a while.”

After all, everyone had their secrets.

Su Zui originally intended to deal with Meng Qingzhi’s matter first. Suddenly, he had another idea and nodded in agreement, saying, ‘Sure, wait for me while I freshen up.’

On his way, Su Zui inquired about the situation. Due to Meng Qingzhi’s action of breaking the illusion array, almost everyone in the Tao community now harbored deep resentment towards him.

Although Su Zui was accustomed to solitude, the nature of his mission in this world required him to constantly improve his public image.

Therefore, before settling the score with Meng Qingzhi completely, he decided to mobilize the power of the masses and teach him a lesson. It would be a win-win situation.

Xie Yu glanced at the bloodstains on Su Zui’s clothes and nodded knowingly.

He was still curious about the peculiar bird perched on Su Zui’s shoulder. However, Su Zui clearly didn’t want to discuss it further, and the bird itself was quite odd. After some consideration, Xie Yu refrained from asking more questions.

But… whether it was his imagination or not, Xie Yu felt that after Su Zui changed the topic, the bird’s eyes seemed to darken slightly.

A disappointed expression, perhaps?

Phoenix felt somewhat dejected. Su Zui didn’t seem inclined to reveal its identity.

In the Phoenix’s memory, its kind possessed strong possessiveness. When their predecessors found someone they admired, the pursuit, relationship confirmation, and even a specific, incredibly elaborate dance performed within their clan were all grand affairs. The goal was to make all other mythical creatures aware of their partner’s affiliation.

But now…

In its beast form, Phoenix’s self-control was weak. The more it thought about it, the more suffocated it felt. It was almost ready to reveal its true identity.

However, considering that Su Zui might get angry, it suppressed the urge.

Xie Yu: ‘…’ The bird’s gaze was quite eerie.

Although he didn’t know what had happened, it felt a bit unsettling!

The phoenix endured until Xie Yu left.

After Xie Yu’s figure disappeared, Su Zui was about to take a bath when he heard a soft “chirp” from the little bird on his shoulder. It then fluttered down to the ground.

Looking up at him, its tiny eyes radiated intense focus.

Su Zui’s hand, which was pulling at his clothes, froze: ?

Phoenix spread its wings, raised its tail, and elegantly spun in place.

The wings and tail feathers were the most beautiful parts of the phoenix’s body. When it danced, they were particularly eye-catching.

But it had forgotten that it was currently just a little bird.

Its body was round, wings short, and tail relatively long. Compared to its majestic and elegant original form, it could only be described as cute.

As it danced, it resembled a rolling dumpling.

Su Zui was utterly bewildered: ??

Why was his boyfriend suddenly breakdancing?

The Boss I Picked Up All Fell In Love With Me - Chapter 75

Chapter 75

In the hotel room, Qing Luan sneezed heavily.

Startled, Suzaku, perched on his shoulder, froze.

Suzaku stretched its tiny head to nuzzle his cheek. “What’s wrong with you?”

Could he be sick?

But divine beasts like them rarely fell ill. If they did, it meant something was seriously wrong with their bodies, not easily fixable, and quite troublesome.

No wonder Suzaku was anxious.

Qing Luan looked puzzled. “…No, I’m fine.”

Probably just an accident.

However, before he could finish speaking, he sneezed again.

Instant karma!

Suzaku: “…”

Nervously, it shed a feather!

The feather floated lazily, spiraling down to Qing Luan’s fingertip.

He caught it and tucked it into his pocket, a faint look of confusion in his eyes. “Really, there’s nothing wrong.”

He didn’t know why he kept sneezing, but physically, he felt fine.

Come to think of it, the divine beasts at the Judgment Office had been having frequent accidents lately. Qing Luan had been exceptionally lucky — no major incidents or injuries so far.

Suddenly, a common saying popped into Qing Luan’s mind.

“Sneezing for no reason — could someone be talking badly about me behind my back?”

But the next second, he realized he might be overthinking.

The idea that sneezing resulted from someone badmouthing you was mostly coincidence or self-imagination. However, a small portion of it was related to the energy of resentment.

When someone harbored intense resentment toward another, it could generate a force that affected the health of the resented person. It was a basic form of curse.

But this kind of thing couldn’t possibly happen to him.

The premise for a curse was that the person casting it had far greater strength than the target. And among all beings, only… Phoenix could surpass him significantly.

Impossible.

Qing Luan dismissed the absurd thought from his mind and returned to the main topic. “Phoenix isn’t here.”

A few hours ago, he’d sensed the phoenix’s aura and hurried over, even forgetting to leave Suzaku behind.

However, the aura was faint. By the time he found this small inn, Phoenix had already left, leaving only the lingering scent of its presence.

Notably, within that aura, there was a trace of a human scent.

Intertwined tightly, it indicated long-term companionship.

Qing Luan found it strange. He’d assumed the aloof Phoenix would leave alone.

Now, in this situation… Is it really carrying a human?

Even Suzaku noticed this issue: “The day Phoenix disappeared, there were indeed two humans.”

One of them was even stood up by him, feeling guilty.

Originally, Suzaku felt quite embarrassed. As a bird with clear grudges, it never broke its promises. Its reputation among mythical creatures was excellent. So when it stood up Meng Qingzhi, it was initially quite uneasy.

However, later on, Suzaku realized that this person named Meng Qingzhi seemed to have character issues. He nearly caused havoc in the mortal realm.

If the fully possessed Xuanwu were to emerge, all of them, the mythical creatures, would be implicated. Chaos would ensue, and the days of mythical creatures would become even more challenging.

Not to mention, the workload at the Judgment Office would undoubtedly skyrocket, and Qing Luan would be even busier, with less time to spare for him.

Although Suzaku didn’t care much about human life, when it came to his own interests, he remained vigilant.

Thinking about it this way, he didn’t feel so guilty anymore.

The valuable gifts he had given Meng Qingzhi were already sufficient.

Speaking of which… Without the divine artifacts he had gifted him, breaking the illusion array would have been challenging for Meng Qingzhi, given his abilities.

The realization made Suzaku feel a bit uneasy.

In a way, he was indirectly responsible for shattering the illusion array and Phoenix’s disappearance.

And Qing Luan, well-known to all, valued Phoenix the most.

If Qing Luan found out about this and its connection to him…

Suzaku: …

Suzaku: …

Life was tough; the little bird felt self-conscious.

Sigh, perhaps he needed to change his habit of being overly generous everywhere.

For a moment, Suzaku fell silent. Without giving Qing Luan a chance to speak, he hurriedly urged, “I can still smell a faint scent. They shouldn’t have gone far. Let’s hurry and catch up!” His words stumbled.

Qing Luan also thought the same, but he found it odd, “What’s wrong with you? Is your throat uncomfortable?”

Suzaku, without a hint of breathlessness, replied, “No, it’s not like that. Let’s not dwell on it. We need to find Phoenix quickly; I’m worried about him!”

He even flapped his tiny wings vigorously, trying to convey his inner impatience.

Qing Luan: …?

Things were getting even stranger.

Meanwhile, Phoenix, who the two subordinates were looking for, stood expressionless in the cold night on the outskirts.

Just a few steps away from him, Su Zui: “…”

After a suffocating silence and brief exchange, he finally realized that he had been mistaken about Boss’s identity all along.

The atmosphere fell silent again. The man, mistaken for someone else, didn’t want to speak, and Su Zui felt mildly embarrassed.

Choking back his emotions, Su Zui blurted out, “Ah, darn system.”

Heaven forbid, not even a hint about the character’s identity!

System 555 wails in impotence, “Wuwuwuwu—”

Well, it’s the main system’s setting. What can it do, quack?

A cold breeze sweeps by, carrying a refreshing chill. Su Zui’s mind, previously occupied by embarrassment, calms down slightly.

He gazes at the man whose brows and eyes appear particularly stern in the moonlight, feeling puzzled.

Since it’s not Qing Luan, then… who is it?

Several names flash through his mind, only to be dismissed one by one.

A bird-like divine beast, even more powerful than Qing Luan and holding a respectable position in the Judgment Office — there aren’t many that fit these criteria.

Suddenly, he notices the Phoenix Spirit Jade in his hand, glowing faintly under the moonlight.

In that split second, he seems to grasp something unbelievable and stammers, “…Phoenix?”

The person across from him remains silent, but the corner of his lips visibly twitches, and the melancholy in his eyes lessens ever so slightly.

Su Zui is shocked. Could it really be?

When he utters those two words, even he hesitates.

Su Zui hadn’t actually considered this.

After all, in the original book, when Phoenix appeared, it was already classified as a dead character. Its true form had been consumed by malevolence, leaving behind only a tainted appearance, devoid of anything else.

Perhaps because of this, Su Zui hadn’t initially associated the Boss’s identity with the Phoenix.

After all, according to common sense, the dead couldn’t be bosses, especially considering how little screen time Phoenix had. Its role was merely to highlight Qing Luan’s stubbornness, not much better than Su Zui, the cannon fodder.

System 555 finishes its crying fit and dutifully analyzes for Su Zui, “It’s likely that after your arrival, the plot deviated. Phoenix wasn’t consumed by malevolence as in the original book. Because the opponent’s abilities and identity align, the system determined him as the Boss.”

Su Zui mutters, “Fine then.” You’re the system, you have the final say.

He recalls the scene when he picked up the bird egg in the small grove and got mistaken for it.

It must have been from that moment that the plot diverged from the original.

The original book didn’t provide detailed descriptions of Phoenix, nor did it specify the date of its demise. So, Su Zui guessed twice— once for Suzaku and once for Qing Luan—but neither hit the mark. Who would’ve thought that the one influenced by his butterfly wings would turn out to be Phoenix?

Under the man’s resentful gaze, Su Zui has a fleeting impression that he’s a scumbag.

Collecting himself, Su Zui explains, “Hold on, don’t overthink it. I don’t know Qing Luan. It’s just a rumor that Phoenix is in seclusion, and Qing Luan is the one in charge at the Judgment Office. That’s why… I made the mistake.”

That statement does indeed make sense.

Phoenix considers it for a moment and reluctantly accepts this explanation.

After all… he knows his own subordinate well enough to suspect any shenanigans.

Phoenix: “Hmm.”

With that single sound, he plunges back into deep silence.

His brows furrow, and his eyes appear even more intense in the moonlight. To an outsider, he might seem in a bad mood.

Su Zui watches him, also remaining silent.

Between the two, tranquility settles once more.

Two grown men gaze at each other under the moonlight — a scene that should be awkward. Yet, for some reason, Su Zui suddenly feels like laughing.

That familiar scent of hidden depth…

Even if centuries pass, he’d recognize it anywhere.

Taking a few steps toward the man, Su Zui feels the night breeze soften, no longer as cold.

The delicate fragrance of blossoms emanates from the human before him, as if enticing someone to pluck them.

Suddenly, Phoenix recalls a flower that only bloomed when the moon reached its zenith — an exquisite, otherworldly bloom.

Crystal-clear and ethereal.

This flower had an incredibly brief lifespan, lasting only a moment. If not plucked during its bloom, it would wither rapidly.

Exquisite and scarce, it was both beautiful and precious.

Back when spirit beasts and mythical creatures thrived, their courtship rituals were abundant.

Thus, a trend emerged: many spirit beasts and mythical creatures fought fiercely, even shedding blood, just to pluck one of these flowers and present it to their desired mate.

In the memories passed down to him, he saw ancestors carrying such a flower, placing it delicately before their partners. Their elegant tail feathers flared passionately, like flames.

________________________

Somehow, at this moment, the Phoenix recalls that memory.

Once dull and unremarkable, it now appears filtered through a different lens.

A sudden impulse surges within him—to pluck a flower that only blooms under moonlight and extend his most resplendent tail feathers in courtship to the young man before him.

Just as countless ancestors had done.

However, he quickly remembers that with waning spiritual energy, many species had gone extinct —including this mysterious flower.

Su Zui had already walked up to him.

Phoenix was quite tall, standing at a solid one meter ninety in his humanoid form. Su Zui, on the other hand, had just reached adulthood and stood at a modest one meter seventy-something. To meet the man’s gaze, he had to tilt his head upward.

Since he had confirmed the man’s identity, Su Zui saw no need to be coy.

However, before proceeding, he needed clarification on one matter.

He raised his hand, revealing a pristine white jade in his palm.

The lifelike image of a pure white phoenix seemed almost ready to come alive in the moonlight.

Su Zui studied the jade for a moment, his emotions complex.

This piece of jade could shatter and repair itself, growing even stronger in the process. It could even absorb malevolent energy… It was all so obvious, yet Su Zui hadn’t considered any other implications. He blamed his rigid mindset.

Then, a thought occurred to him. He rubbed the surface of the jade with his fingertip. “Is there a fragment of your soul within this jade?”

Although phrased as a question, his tone bordered on a statement.

Upon hearing Su Zui’s matter-of-fact inquiry, Phoenix, who had been lost in his own thoughts, suddenly snapped back to reality in the chilly breeze.

Simultaneously shy and slightly anxious, he realized.

He knew.

He knew that he had secretly placed a strand of his soul near Su Zui.

Would this be perceived as an intrusion?

Given Phoenix’s proud temperament, if someone had dared to do this without his knowledge, he would have left them severely injured.

However, at this moment, the Phoenix remained blissfully unaware of a phenomenon known as the “love filter.”

Observing the sudden blush coloring Phoenix’s ears, Su Zui, now wearing his own love-tinted glasses, didn’t feel anger. Instead, he found the situation… rather endearing.

How cute, to become so shy over something like this.

In a previous world, after several years of dating, the highly adaptable Mr. Fu quickly transformed into an experienced “old driver” (a slang term for someone experienced in romantic matters). It had been a long time since he had seen someone blush at a single sentence.

Su Zui stared at the faintly reddened earlobe of Phoenix, his eyes brightening with a subtle smile. Since Phoenix had hidden a trace of its soul in this spiritual jade, every time he touched the jade, wasn’t he essentially getting handsy with him?

Thinking back to the recent past when he absentmindedly played with the jade, Su Zui: “…”

Despite their advanced age, this kind of playfulness was undeniably exciting.

The fact that Phoenix had endured until now was quite… charming!

Su Zui, under the influence of a filter as thick as several hundred meters, confidently concluded, “Rest assured, I’ll take responsibility for you.”

Having already touched it, he wasn’t the type to shirk responsibility.

Phoenix, who had initially expected a death sentence: …???

Phoenix: !!!

Meanwhile, in their hearts, both the exclamation marks and Suzaku, who had already found the place, were equally surprised.

Suzaku stood there in shock.

Suzaku pretended to remain calm.

Suzaku turned and left.

Pretending not to have heard anything that required silencing the bird!
